The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) in 2017 after a competitive selection process selected Surath Wickramasinghe Associates -SWA as the Architects for the International Cricket Stadium at Mandaitivu, Jaffna. This stadium will serve the Northern and Eastern Provinces of Sri Lanka.
The site is 52 acres in extent is 8 kms distance from the City Center of Jaffna. A significant feature is that the silhouettes of the buildings and other structures in Jaffna City could be seen from the site. The Airport is approximately 40 kms. The access to the site is off the Jaffna / Mannar - A32 road to the Mandaitivu Island. The access road may need to be widened after the implementation of the International Cricket Stadium. In addition, the other infrastructure facilities such as power and water will need to be provided to the site. Part of the site is low lying and the rest of the land is flat and on high ground. The land borders the Lagoon / Sea, to the North and East. The site is unencumbered.
The Preliminary Concept Design for the International Cricket Stadium was done in 2018 and was approved by SLC. However, in order to get the land released to the SLC and other legal factors the implementation was delayed. The land matters are now being resolved, but, due to the Covid 19 Pandemic and other constraints, the final approval to commence work is awaited from the SLC.
The Master Plan for the International Cricket Stadium incorporating a Grandstand and other connected facilities, Cricket Academy, Practice Pitches, Car Parking was provided.
