Conservation of Abhayagiri Vihara Complex

The project commenced in July 1985 and continued up to  2005.

One of the largest monastic complexes dating from 2nd Century B.C. The land area of 600 Acres, Abhayagiriya accommodated as many as 7000 Monks. The writings by the Chinese traveler/Monk Fa Hien in the 5th Century provides information on the internal functioning of monastery life and the buildings standing today bear witness to a rich cultural heritage.

The Abhayagiriya Monastery Complex contains the Abhayagiriya dagoba, the Samadhi Buddha, the Kuttam Pokuna (Twin Ponds), Mahasena's Palace, Elephant Pond, Ratnaprasada (Gem Palace) and the Residential Complexes (Panchawasas)

The Conservation of this Monastery which is a part of the World Heritage Site at Anuradhapura, comes under the Conservation Programme of the Cultural Triangle as a UNESCO sponsored Project. Conservation Sites were selected by the Client depending on the availability of Archaeological evidence and materials to restructure the monuments.

Surath Wickramasinge Associates were commissioned to prepare the necessary drawings of the selected Monuments for Conservation. The work involved, obtaining evidence from Archeologist’s to obtain a accurate comprehension regarding the History of the ruins and their special values. Site Management, Buildings, Civil Works, Conservation of Historic Monuments at the Site, Quantity Surveying were provided by the Firm.
