SWA is one of the most innovative architectural and integrated design practices in Sri Lanka. Over the past forty eight years, the practice has pioneered a sustainable approach to architecture, interior design, engineering, and allied sectors, including Project Management and Cost Consultancy. The wide range of work includes from urban design, urban infrastructure, urban reservations, conservations, hospitality, health, civic and cultural buildings, sports, internal cricket stadium, offices , workplaces, apartment complexes to private houses. Based in Colombo, SWA is a pre - eminent practice.

By working together creatively from the start of a project, architects and engineers combine their knowledge to devise integrated, sustainable design solutions. From appointment to completion, the design teams are supported by numerous in-house disciplines, including project management and a construction review panel. And to ensure consistency and personal service, the same core team sees a project through from beginning to end. The design process is reviewed regularly, by the Principal Architect and other Key Professionals.
The design of each project is reviewed regularly, both formally and informally, under the direction of the Design Directorate, which is led by Chairman Ar/ Plnr Dr Surath Wickramasinghe, Ar Upula Chandrakumara, MEP Eng Sudharman Pitigala, Structural Engineer Eng M C R Kumara, Quantity Surveying / Value Engineering QS Mervyn Ratnayake. The Design Directorate has full responsibility for design within the office.
While its involvement is important in the early, conceptual design phases, it ensures continuity and quality at every stage of a project, as well as encouraging the sharing of expertise across the project team. The Design Directorate was created in the spirit of challenging and being challenged. It also plays an important role in stimulating research, as well as in arranging cross-disciplinary design workshops on various issues, such as urban design and sustainability.
SWA has a reputation for tackling large and complex Architectural, Planning and Engineering, Design challenges, and certain Building types benefit from the attention of designers with specific skills. With its comprehensive offering of advanced skills and multidisciplinary teams, SWA is uniquely well-placed to collaboratively design technically-demanding and primarily functional buildings. The firm has architects engaged in the specialist areas of Hospitality, Health care and Transport Interchange Planning.
From working on large multidisciplinary projects, SWA has developed its Design Team Leadership Service. In this role SWA is a non-partisan coordinator of all the Design Disciplines, on behalf of the client. This brings clarity of lead, making sure that overall Project and Client objectives are prioritised over any competing concerns that arise, to ensure the efficient completion of Projects; on time and on budget. In this role SWA leads and integrates externally-appointed Consultants within the Team of Designers.
SWA are now a leader in Construction Project Management having successfully completed several Projects and also currently completing a few more Mega Projects. In addition, using BIM-compliant Software such as Revit and Naviswork for Design, coordination and Clash Detection relevant to Architecture, Engineering including MEP and Cost Management. This enables to make the Project documentation in a comprehensive BIM Model.
